E1. Deetron / Procreation "Lontano"
F1. Aardvarck "Come Maddalena" All original tracks composed and arranged by Ennio Morricone Quotes & Biographies Of The Remixers CD 1: 1. 2Raumwohnung (Germany) 'Morricone builds a bridge between classic and pop music. He pays a lot of attention to tones and sounds, that makes him all time modern.' 2Raumwohnung are Inga Humpe known from NDW 80s formations such as Neonbabies or projects like DÖF or Humpe&Humpe and Tommi Eckart, who´s been engaged in electronic music and soundscores. At the moment they are one of the most hyped producers, artists, singers, songwriters etc. Their discography seems endless. They have worked for artists such as The Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, Marc Almond, Trevor Horn, Sin with Sebastian, Howard Jones, Trio and many many others ! Electronic beats with acoustic guitar and soulful German word-plays....that´s what 2Raumwohnung are all about. These two Berlin residents are in the process of spreading their euroexperimental sound all over the world! 2. Bandini (France) 'We all consider Mr Ennio Morricone as a "Sacred Monster" and we really thought his music was holly and untouchable. So why have we accepted to ("remix") work on one of his themes? Well first of all it's mostly because our music refers directly to movies he worked on and we also made up our minds & changed our attitude towards our "idols". We now tend to think that being too respectful to them may prevent any creative process.' Bandini is originally the name of the main character in John Fante's novels. Since early 2001 it is also the name of a band the brainchild of both singers as well as songwriters François & Andy from France who created the band. The duo is playing all instruments which consist of bass, guitar, piano and marinba by themselves. They started recording homemade demos which attracted the attention of Black Tambour Boris Picq and Guillaume Salançon . They've just put the finshing touch to their first album to be released early 2004. Their sound is like the original novel character, not only touching but also versatile and flawed . Bandini is not inspired from pop and rock traditions only, but also from hip-hop, blues, cabaret, psychedelic music, lo-fi indie rock, and other seemingly contradictory genres, creating a shambling collage-like sound all their own. 3. Hird (Sweden) 'I enjoyed remixing Morricone so much, there is so much to use and be influenced by in the original piece - the theme, bi-theme, the harmonies and that cowboyridesoffintothesunset-vibe. I wanted this remix to ride off into the sunset and have the horse to stall and go EEEEEHH in the middle of the scene.' Hird is 21-year-old Christoffer Berg from Gothenburg in Sweden. Christoffer started making electronic music in his early teens, inspired by the experimental and jazzy Drum&Bass happening at the time. His band "Octagon Session" claimed underground recognition and won a cross-over award in the finals of Sweden's biggest music competition in '98. Under the pseudonym of Hird he mixes modern electronic rhythms and minimalistic downtempo with the retro sounds of jazz and soul-filtered, looped and cut up grooves, recorded and played by himself, sometimes with guest musicians and sometimes with rare samples. The first release from Hird was "Keep you Hird", a slow house/jazz groove that was picked up by DJs like Michael Reinboth, Alan Brown, Matthew K., Gilles Peterson, Patric Forge, Coldcut, Wai Wan, Quantic and Nicola Conte. As a remixer, Hird is well sought for. Christoffer is not only a resident DJ, he's also the arranger and conductor of the 10 piece resident live band "Inhouse Digits". He´s also releasing experimental electronic music as Christoffer Brus on "Hobby Industries" in Copenhagen owned by electronic artist and Björk-producer Thomas Knak aka Opiate. Furthermore he plays percussion in the Swell Session live band, mixes tracks for Swedish independent pop success band "the Knife", plays with some of Gothenburgs finest jazz musicians in the electronic band "Priming Orchestra", does original movie music for a film that will hit the screen this fall, plays records and has coffee at his favourite café "Café Publik" in Gothenburg. Check out his remix of "I Crudeli" on Volume One of this compilation. 4. Swell Session (Sweden) 'My fascination of Mr Morricone's music is that he always knows how to create a mood, right from the first note, often adding his trademark sense of humour like in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". Yet he knows when to just keep it beautiful like in "A Lidia". I feel this is exactly what I try to do as Swell Session and I tried to maintain the beauty of "A Lidia" while remixing. Growing up on Hönö, a small island outside Gothenburg, Andreas started playing the piano at the age of six and discovered techno and other experimental music at the age of 14. Today Andreas is involved in several projects. He released his first 12", ´The Music in her eyes´ as Swell Session on Hollo recordings in February 2001. Since then there have been two more singles, as well as some remixes. Swell Session has received acclaim from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Les Gammas, Seiji , Patrick Forge and LTJ Bukem. Under the name Stateless Andreas has released a number of twelves and the album "Art of no state" on the UK based label Freerange records. Andreas has been doing remixes for acts like Nuspirit Helsinki, Samuel L Session, and Susumu Yokota. Swell Session is Andreas Saag with invited guest musicians and producers like Jonatan Bäckelie, Yukimi Nagano, Elsa Hedberg, Paul Lachenardiere and Christoffer Berg and has already remixed a Morricone track on Volume One of this compilation, namely "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly". 5. Eddy & Dus (Croatia) 'The greatness of Ennio Morricone, for us, is in his ability to express deep and complex emotions in a simple and minimalistic way. What we also love in his music is the influence of Mediterannean which can be felt throughout his music. It was a great honour to do a remix of a composition by such a great composer !!!' Eddy Ramich and Zvonimir Dusper from Croatia are remarkable deep house and jazz producers representing the next generation of music producers strongly influenced by the variety of dance genres. Their sound has the uniqueness of continental freestyle jazz wave as well as the Mediterranean influence which can be heard on their second album due to release early next year. They´ve done several remixes for the likes of Nicola Conte and also remixed "Outra Vida" Of Les Gammas (CPT 111-1). Eddy attended music school, playing the violin. During the years of breakdance fever he became interested in hip hop, his affection towards black music developed more and more ever since when during his visit to the UK in 1988 he became familiar with acid jazz and soulful house, after which he started djing quite seriously. 1991, he took up a Saturday residency at the Aquarius club and it was at this time he started to produce his own music. Next step would be to have a radio show on 101 station. The show would be called Kontrapunkt and has been broadcasting for 8 years, there also is a club night which featured guests like Gilles Peterson and Kyoto Jazz Massive and a festival by that name. In 1995 Eddy bumped into Dus, a chemistry and connection that still holds true and strong today was born. An understanding of each others' methods and persona have solidified a meaningful musical relationship. A mutual respect for each others input being the essential ingredient to their success, both djing all over the world. 6. Tom Middleton / Cosmos (UK) 'How do you redefine a musical masterpiece created by the mortal equivalent of Apollo? With honesty and humility...spellbound by its illustrious drama and bittersweet euphony, I simply responded to my feelings... Molte grazie Signor Morricone. Siete la mia ispirazione. Salute !' A classically-trained pianist and cellist, eclectic DJ Tom Middleton discovered graffiti, breaking and surfing whilst living in Cornwall. He started going to clubs and met Richard James (Aphex Twin) in 1989. From there, he learned the science of sampling and synth programming. This friendship lead to Tom co-producing a track for the 'Analogue Bubblebath' EP as Schizophrenia, which has now reached cult status. After graduating in Graphic Design in 1991, Tom met Mark Pritchard, a Dj with similar musical tastes. The pair formed a host of pseudonyms, the most popular of these was Jedi Knights, whose album 'New School Science' inspired everyone from The Prodigy & The Chemical Brothers to Daft Punk & the Freestylers. Since this, Tom has released material as Chameleon, Modwheel and Cosmos. Forthcoming stuff on P Record, home of Miss Dynamite and Dj Zinc. If you ever have the chance to listen to Tom in a live Dj set, don't hesitate! Go out and get knocked down by his magical soundscapes and superb use of modern technology. 7. Deetron / Procreation (Switzerland) 'I am glad and honoured to be part of this project and to be able to remix one of the greatest film score composers ever.' The man behind Procreation and Deetron and various other projects is Sam Geiser from Bern, Switzerland. He first got into contact with music during his early childhood, his father is a Jazz musician but he´s always been into hiphop as well. He started flipping records in 1992, soon he rediscovered Jazz with the help of the incredible track on Pharao Sanders' Thembi Album. After having made his first sound experiments with a sampler in 1994, he continuously built up his own studio because of his avid interest in electronic sounds. An introduction to Stefan Riesen from Phont Music in 1997 led to his first release as Soul Mate on Phont Music. He then travelled to Japan for sets and recorded the "Double Exposure Vol. 1" EP with DJ Shufflemaster in Tokyo. In the year 2000 he was contacted for an EP by In-tec records where he released "Alien Entertainment" - the very successful Deetron EP which was hammered by the likes of Jay Denham, Claude Young, Jeff Mills and Laurent Garnier. Sam played sets at clubs all around Europe and his productions got licensed to many compilations around the globe. Procreation tracks appeared on the Compost 100 Compilation ("It's all related to life") and the Compost Community sampler ("Citizen"). The "Rhythmatism" EP (CPT 108-1) once again sees Samuel diggin' deep into the realms of electronic offbeat, tech-step and nu jazz. Procreation also did a remix for Victor Davies' "Lady Luck" on JCR, available on Victor Davies' remix album (JCR 031). 8. Fussible (Mexico) 'The melody line hooked us up to make the remix, besides the fact that Ennio Morricone was part of our musical influence, and very popular in our home town Tijuana by generations.' Fussible is a band fromTijuana formed by Pepe Mogt alongside Roberto Mendoza and Melo Ruiz who have worked together since 1991. As Artefakto they had released three albums when they started off with their projects Fussible and Panoptica in 1997. The first Fussible album in 1999 by the name of "Fono" was heavily influenced by techno and breakbeat. Their music is in the form of Norteño and Tambora, the traditional music forms of the Northwest of Mexico. The rhythmic and melodic complexities of these traditional idioms is combining the use of electronics and dance music aesthetics with the hard, driving sounds and rhythms of traditional Northern Mexican street music. Known by "Nor-Tec," which is in Mexico a contraction of "Norteño" (of the north) and techno. More bands from Tijuana and Ensenada joined in this sonic experiment that lead to the first Nortec sampler CD, after which the participants of that compilation joined forces together to create the Nortec Collective. 9. Daniel Klein / Gucciman (Spain) 'Every time I listen to Ennio's original version of "My Name Is Nobody", I reminisce about good ol' times back in East Germany, when I saw Terence Hill get buckwild on screen in a movie-theater called Capitol in Schwerin. Well, you can't beat the original, and it's always hard to remake your all-time-favourite only to face the fact that you should've had kept your hands off it !' After having moved to Hamburg in 1991, Daniel played his first professional set at EDK which became his first residency. By 1994 Daniel had taken his musical skill from the turntables into the studio recording his first studio work for Andreas Dorau by remixing "Telefon". Daniel had begun to attract the attention of National Media and recorded his first interview for VIVA in 1995. By 1996 moved to Mallorca in the Balearic Islands/Spain and spent the next 3 years holding down one of the most sought after jobs in house music being resident Dj at Space, the most famous after party in the world. It was at the end of the 1999 season when Daniel decided to end his residency at Space in order to concentrate on individual projects. A residency at the famous Garito Cafe followed where he is also invited Djs/producers from all over the world (Knee Deep, Can 7, Lofty, Neil Aline, Soulcamp) and began the renowned "Black Nights" at the Garito Café later to become the title of his big selling CD compilation. The CD was the first CD release for Flamingo Discos, which Daniel formed in 2000 with his Partners Kiko Navarro &Thorsten Krohn. Daniel has since been kept continually busy dj'ing over Europe, producing (also known as Kiez Kidz, Medecine Men), remixing (Fertile Ground, Shakatak, De Lacy, Jon Cutler a.m.m.) and running his record label, Flamingo Discos distributed by Peppermint Jam - a quality record label for soulful dancemusic. 10. Markus Enochson (Sweden) 'I was very happy to work with Mr Morricone's music. And I hope you were happy with the result.' Markus has been writing and producing music since his early childhood years. His talent is obvious; with a strong soul and jazz sensibility Markus has created his own and very unique blend of house music that is easily recognizable among his peers. The last two years Markus has enjoyed enormous success worldwide. He collaborated with James Ingram and the Masters at Work on the critically acclaimed hit "Lean on Me". His own production, "I am the Road" released on Louie Vega and Kenny Dope's label Masters At Work was one of the great house music anthems of 2002. He´s won the theme music award at the Europe Music Awards of MTV in 2000 and has worked on an audio concept and channel music for the television channel Telepiu in Italy. Markus has been an integral part of the house music culture in Sweden and proved himself on the international Dj arena. His music crosses the traditional genre distinctions in dance music culture wether they be house or techno. When Markus is not busy in the studio he's most likely spinning records somewhere in the world 11. Mopse (France) 'Ennio Morricone sure is one of the few composers who really changed my conception of music and my way of producing / creating tracks (my parents had a huge pile of small 7" vinyls in which I found several famous themes by Morricone). "The Man With The Harmonica" is the perfect example of a theme that is more expressive than any dialogue. "What have you done to Solange" is less known but it's a deep composition and I can definitely relate to the inner feeling and the special atmosphere of the track, also I find it very close to my own "musical universe".' Mopse is 20year-old producer Thomas Ridard who lives near Avignon in an old mansion in the middle of fields and orchards. His mother is a relatively famous thriller writer and his father is a sound engineer. He uses his homemade breakbeats to compose instrumentals and samples his phat vinyl collection inherited from parents and grand-parents. There is one of his tracks to be found on Black Tambour's "Beats & Breakfast Vol II" compilation which was released last year and he is also preparing tracks for a German label (Pavlek) and has been working full time on a musical score for a play to be showcased for the world famous "Festival D'Avignon" all through July 2003. Mopse is also spinning Drum'n'Bass at large parties but he is also a great Hip-hop head more interested in the work of producers like Dj Vadim, Ollie Teeba & Jake Wheary of Herbaliser and the whole Def Jux sound. Mopse left Andy AIM really impressed after a Soundklash party with the quality of his sound and by the originality of his breakbeats and has lately played with DJ Krush. He cultivates his own marijuana and he has stopped going to school after passing his A-Levels , and he's now preparing a degree to become a sound engineer . 12. Crazy Baldheads (Australia) 'We chose this obscure Ennio sample for its beautiful vocal quality. Mr Morricone has shown us how to suggest a mood with unique combinations and sonic manipulation of undervalued instruments.' Crazy Baldheads started as a partnership between Tim Prince and Pete Lawler in 1997 through their mutual love for reggae, especially Lee Perry style dub, and also a love for powerful hip hop music and lyrics. Inspired by the homegrown independence of both these influences, Tim and Pete established their own recording studio and named it the I-Sonic Institute. A combination of both analog and digital equipment, it has become a creative home limited only by the edges of the I-Sonic universe. Soon after, Susan Forrester joined, bringing to the Baldheads her turntablist skills, as well as lyrical, vocal and production contributions. Finally Miselenious found her way to them and became their second vocalist. And so the two strong men and two strong women became one. The four heads are: Professor Loom (Tim Prince) - the engineer, programmer and various instrument player while also adding vocals and lyrics. He sits at the controls. Dr.Pump (Peter Lawler) occupies the role of keyboard, bass and guitar while having an ear on the production side as well as adding sweet vocals and lyrics. S.F the Arresta (Susan Forrester) adds her turntablist and sampling skills, sometimes vocals. Miselenious (Eleni Meros) is the vocalist, sampling provider and parttime lyricist...= Crazy Baldheads. 13. Dan Curtin (USA) 'Ennio Morricone is a composer who created music decades ahead of its time. He has the ability to innovate while at the same time create classic masterpieces. I chose to do a more ambient/ listening style mix of "La Ragazza del Padre" that would respect the integrity of the original rather than simply sampling a loop and placing a beat under it, which in my opinion would not be consistent with the spirit of Mr. Morricone's work.' Dan Curtin´s fascination with music was sparked around 1982 when he discovered the burgeoning hip-hop movement. Hip-hop, along with new wave, electro, and other sonic innovations of the 80s began to loom large in his life. Curtin's first few records were released on Detroit's now defunct 33 RPM Records and Belgium's Buzz Records. Shortly thereafter, he started his own label, Metamorphic Recordings. Dancers and listeners alike began to take notice of his innovative sound signature, and before long Dan Curtin found himself being hailed as a key player in techno and house music. With his profile on the rise, he eventually caught the attention of labels diverse as New York's legendary Strictly Rhythm, England's Peacefrog and Japan's Sublime Records, and more recently Chicago house imprints Moody and Afterhours. Curtin has been releasing records regularly on these as well as on other labels for the past 9 years. The new century has given Curtin the opportunity to focus on the house music side of the business with many productions under his Purveyors of Fine Funk moniker including a full length release on the English label, Nepenta --released in 2002. With more than 60 singles and 6 full-length albums under his belt, Curtin's career is in full swing and storming forward. Despite his hectic schedule of globe-trotting to DJ gigs and running Metamorphic Recordings Dan still keeps pushing boundaries with forward thinking music his utmost priority. Keep your telescope focused ahead of the current trends and that's where he'll be. CD 2 1. Computerjockeys (Germany) 'Morricone has doubtlessly a good sense for creating tunes you'll immediately get hooked on. At the same time, the very sound of the melody is so catchy it makes up a part as vital to the track as the tune itself. To me, "A Man in Space" is a nice example for this. My remix of the track is mainly based on a variation of the original tune.' The two Cologne-based Computerjockeys 'Digital Jockey' and Wolfgang Hagedorn were amongst the first musicians who replaced two turntables with two laptop-computers. 1999, after three years of touring and many remixes they published their debut-album 'Computerjockeys' on the famous label 'Harvest'. The Computerjockeys produce their tracks on the computer, they don't use any external instruments or MIDI, every track is composed solely with samples. As there is no studio either, the production process is like a modern kind of home-recording way of making music, saving costs and space. For their new album 'Plankton' on Island Records they have invited the singers Regina Janssen, Stina K., Ayako Akashiba and Stella Schwarz. Stella did the vocals on their latest hit "My Golden Boy" which is the soundtrack for the same-called japanese cartoon-series on MTV. Laptopelektroluzzers unite ! 2. Yen Sung (Portugal) 'About Morricone what I have to say is that I chose that track cause it is very filmy! "Nadine" in particular has an action/espionage kind of feeling and that's what I tried to pull out from this track.' Yen got her break in clubs in 1991 when she applied to work as barmaid in Lisbon but was offered the opportunity to DJ instead. The girl was a natural as she was offered a residency soon after ! She started to play out at other clubs such as Kremlin, Benzina and Gartejo in Lisbon and at Rock's, Cais, Pacha and Vaticano in the North of Portugal, gaining lots of recognition for her talent. As her career began to develop, she burst onto the international stage playing at various venues in Germany (WMF, Delicious Donuts and Root Down); Belgium (Planet Claire and Eskimo); Spain (La Boite, Weekend, The Room, People); London (Cargo); Paris (MixMove Festival) as well as Vienna, Austria; Warsaw, Poland, etc. Yen started working on Portuguese radio first at XFM and had her own show called "Chocolate City"on Radio Marginal exploring her rather diverse and eclectic taste in music. Yen plays mainly house but she also likes to delve into other sounds like Soul, Hip Hop, R&B and Jazz. Her style is varied and unpredictable - sometimes funky, sometimes dark and twisted and sometimes on the Latin tip - her selection always has energy and soul. Once she even was vocalist with the famous Portuguese hiphop band Da Weasal. Yen's achievements as a DJ have been cemented with a residency at one of Lisbon's most exclusive clubs, Lux and she can be seen there most weekends. Recent guest appearances include the 'Isle of MTV Festival' in Lisbon, 'International Rescue' at Bar Rumba in London, 'Nite Flight' in Austria and La Suite in Rome amongst many others. 3. Chicken Lips (UK) 'Ennio Morricone ....sparse arrangements, unorthodox instrumentation (bells, electric guitars, harmonicas, the distinctive twang of the jew's harp) the guy is crazy, that's why we like him !'
Existent since 1999 Chicken Lips are DJ/producers Andy Meecham (Athletico and solo work as Sir Dew) & Dean Meredith (Psychedelia Smith) along with co-hort/DJ Steve 'Fella' Kotey. Digging back a little further into their past you find that the pair were once Bizarre Inc. who recorded for Vinyl Solution having 3 UK top 10 hits in the early nineties with 'Playing with Knives', 'Such a Feeling' & 'I'm Gonna Get Ya' remixing the likes of Madonna. Over a decade later and with a major change in sound they now keep themselves busy with their work for Kingsize as well as their recordings for Session as ZeeFunkg and for DC recordings as Big200. The boys hold a very busy Dj schedule playing the length and breath of the UK and guesting in various European countries and the States. 4. Domu (UK) 'He is unrivalled in his body of work: quality equaling quantity. Ennio has influenced so many people in so many different genres of music, through albums, films and television. His name should lay alongside such classic scorers as Hermann, Mancini, Schiffrin and Williams most definitely !!!' Having worked as a teenage drum and bass Dj/ prodcuer, Dominic Stanton from Bedford (England) has moved up steadily in the producer ranks. Initially working for Reinforced Records under the disguise of Sonar Circle 7 years ago, Dominic's sound and influence have moved and morphed from his first love of hiphop, Drum and Bass, to Jazz Funk, Brazillian, House, Techno and beyond ! As Domu he's had many releases and remixes, from his 'Up and Down' Lp on Archive, to remixing King Britt, 4Hero, Vikter Duplaix and Jazzanova ! He also collaborates with many others on different projects, including Realside, Yotoko, Kudu, Vaceo, Bakura and most notably Rima This project with Enrico 'Volcov' Crivellaro is now moving quickly with an album and singles forthcoming on JCR. 'This World' is an album picking up major props, and spans a wide selection of the pairs musical passions and influences. Domu continues to Dj around the world and loves every minute. 5. Alessio Santoni / Mucca Macca (Italy) 'Ennio Morricone is one of the few composers whose music can be seen and sometimes watched. Remixing a piece of his music is as enjoyable as making a pizza using tomatoes from his kitchen garden.' DJ and producer Alessio Santoni is one third of the Sardinian trio Mucca Macca and has an impressive collection of soundtracks on vinyl. He started sampling music with a Revox B-77 at the age of 14 and has by now mastered that technique so he´s moved onto more sophisticated sampling machinery. His main objective is to keep on a straight line and turn left at the next set of lights, sir. Just by that restaurant over there ! Mucca Macca are Laura Mura, Maurizio Rope and Alessio who debuted in 1998 smashing the Japanese market voting spirit and body to the trip hop, drum' n' bass and sound coming from beyond sleeve and Bristol in particular. You find yourself somewhere between slowed down rhythms and electronic, sonorous outbreaks and small distortions, vanguard jazz. Mucca Macca work in a genuine way, having earned the consents of the wide public. They´ve already included a "Puts one evening to supper" - hommage to Master Ennio Morricone on their "Schizophreniq" album. 6. Doctor Rockit (UK) 'Every sound has its place. Every melody its story. Every phrase its turn. Where do you begin when taking Morricone's music into a different century. For me, there was only one choice. I just took the sounds and ran with them. After all, this is film music. Without rescoring the film there is nothing left for me to do except to hear the piece as a group of components willing to be transplanted. So that's what I did. And just so you know, every sound in the remix comes from the original.' 31 year-old Matthew Herbert is an established musician and producer working in the field of electronic music who´s remixed various artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, Moloko or the Avalanches. Known for stretching boundaries and breaking the conventions traditionally associated with the genre, he is one of the few independently minded artists still striving to be innovative and experimental. As a recording artist since 1996 he has released music on a variety of record labels under names such as Herbert, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy and Wishmountain having performed live in the United States, Japan, Australia, Asia and extensively across Europe (including appearances at Barcelona's Sonar Festival, London's South Bank and the Montreux Jazz Festival). In 2002, he has already received requests for live performances from the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Sydney Opera House. Matthew began to investigate the relationship between music and performance while studying Drama at Exeter University in the 1990's. He sampled his immediate environment in an attempt to create a direct link between what the audience was seeing and what it was hearing. This has since encouraged and allowed him to write music for film, theatre and television. In recent years he has written music for a variety of short and feature-length films, including Justin Kerrigan's 'Human Traffic', Don Cameron's 'Paradisiac', Bernard Rudden's 'Daybreak', 'Nailing Vienna' by Jonathan English and most recently for Blanca Li's feature musical, 'Le Defi'. 7. Aardvarck (The Netherlands) 'The Italian stallion of the soundtrack...' Over the years, beat freakery DJ Aardvarck aka Mike Kivits has built up a solid reputation of uncompromising quality and versatility in the Dutch dance scene, both underground and above. From spinning hiphop in the early 80s up to the present he's been in the avantgarde of all major dance styles. Lately he's produced records for Music for Speakers, Rushhour, Delsin and others. He's been djing with Rednose District, Domu, Recloose and Carl Craig as to mention a few. His tracks have deeply soulful and funky contrasts with deeper atmospheres around and an innovative approach to music, running the full spectrum from soft ambient interludes to the more uptempo beat trickery. Mixmaster Morris, Kirk Degiorgio and Jazzanova played out his releases already and Domu and Nubian Mindz were happy to remix Aardvarck´s stuff. Aardvarck is spirational, creative and has unique production skills, using a minimal studio set up. Having delivered a diverse debut album by the name of "Find The Cow" including hardcore broken beats, abstract hip-hop, atmospheric electronica, deep cut-up techno tracks and beautiful ambient soundscapes, Aardvarck tugs and teases the listener into new textures, moods and sounds. 8. Haruomi Hosono (Japan) 'I'm a bit worried that Ennio might feel offended as I've freely altered the score by such a maestro in the film music history. But It was a great honour to take part of this kind of project.' Haruomi who was born in Tokyo in 1947 and started his career playing in various bands including the self-formed innovative "Happy End", fusing rock music and Japanese words who are still considered a legendary band in Japan although having split up in 1973. Haruomi then released two solo albums, calling this unique style of music "Chunky Sound" (mixture sounds). Also the producer team Tin Pan Alley was formed who created the mainstream of current Japanese Folk and Pop and Haruomi launched his own label, Yen. The 80s caught him adopting computer sounds for the very first time. He started working with Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto in the recording of his solo album "Paradiso", with whom he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra. YMO achieved the worldwide success in both music and sales and gave strong influence in the entire music world till they separated in 1983 and Haruomi established two new labels by the name of Non Standard and Monado. Several releases were to follow up till now with a reunition of YMO around 1995, new projects entitled Swing Slow Hat as well as Harry And Mac being reminiscent of the 70s swamp sound and new label, Daisyworld Discs. March 2000 saw the release of "Hosono Box 1969 ~ 2000 " compiling his works in 4 discs. In Fall 2000 he formed Tin Pan with Shigeru Suzuki and Tatsuo Hayashi and Sketch Show with Yukihiro Takahashi (an ex-member of YMO). With Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cornelius joining in the recording, it has been getting a great response in the Japanese electronic music scene. 9. Gerd (The Netherlands) 'Veruschka is just one of my favourite Ennio Morricone soundtracks. 'Le Fotografie' is an 1 minute, sci-fi, erotic, post-sixties track which I wanted to last a bit longer.' Gerd is one of Holland's most profilic and acclaimed producers. With influences ranging from Jao Bosco and Marco Valle to funk, jazz and hiphop, it is a safe bet that Gert-Jan Bijl from Rotterdam, would deliver a very interesting take on contemporary dance music. His productions as Gerd including his 2 exquisite albums "This touch is greater than moods" (1997) and "High Wide & Wonderful" (2001) connect with liquid ambience, tech-jazz, funk and soft romance, sometimes sounding like a less spaced-out Deep Space Network or Detroit's more abstract listening-orientated excursions. In the 90s Gerd worked with people like Kirk Degiorgio (Op-Art), Mark Pritchard & Tom Middleton (Universal Language), Leftfield (Hardhands/Offshoot), Fila Brazillia (Pork Recordings), Future Sound Of London (Jumpin & Pumpin). Over the last couple of years Gert-Jan Bijl & Paulo Delgado have done remixes for the likes of Zuco 103, Koop ft. Terry Callier, Jaam, Duplex, Brenda Fassie, Catch Up, Cinérex, etc. Last year Gerd started his own label called 4lux Recordings on which killer records by Heavenly Social, Amplified Orchestra and Machine Shop were released. 10. Nick Holder And Kaje (Canada) 'Beautiful orchestrations of strings, vibes and guitar along with a stunning hypnotic vocal, are the reasons why Nick Holder and Kaje chose do this particular remix. A film score by one of the world's most prolific Composers, Ennio Morricone, from Vergogna Schifosi released in 1969.' Canadian deep house supremo Nick Holder has been busy at work on his brand new as yet untitled album to be released by the end of 2003. Having been locked in the studio for like over a year, it's of no surprise that he has surpassed himself with the fruits of his labour. The sounds currently coming from the DNH studios range from the deep and jazzy house that Holder has become renowned for as well as hiphop, reggae, electronic and laid back grooves. Known for his releases as the second part of Trackheadz on DNH Records and his big remix of M1's "Electronic Funk 2000", Kaje has now completed his first fully digital, electronic album. This album can best be described as being completely influenced by the legendary groups of the 80s which of course includes Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and New Order to name a few. Kaje will be launching his own label, Kompressor Digital, later on this year and debuting with new mixes of the latin stomper "Terra Do Bravo" from Pedras Da Rua. 11. Ayro (USA) 'I love the folk music quality in Mr Morricone's compositions, and felt it necessary to pay homage with a literal translation of the melody. You can create clear images and stir emotions with ideas that are quite simple. And that is the dance; the visual representation of music.' Here comes the singer/songwriter and keyboardist who impressed us the most during last year : Please welcome true child prodigy Ayro aka Jeremy Ellis straight outa Detroit of the US of A who´s also released stuff under the name of L.S. or L.S.E. (Live Set Experience). After having lead a breakthrough performance at the 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Festival his simply unbelievable full on Detroit home cellar production remix of Jazzanova's "Days To Come" really impressed us. This remix is available on JCR 032-1 as well as on Jazzanova's "Remixed" album JCR 040. Ayro´s latest EP, "Drink" released in February 2002 on Omoa Music features original and a capella versions of the title track, an up-tempo, radio-friendly love song that captures the classic pop soul of Motown. Also available is the underground smash hit and Dj favourite "Let This" which had been gracing the top of the Dj playlists by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Francois K or Dego of 4 Hero. 12. Kahuun (Norway) "When I was 7 years old I saw the movie 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. The Morricone whistle theme from the soundtrack got burned into my mind and is still showing up when it's necessary to act rough & tough like old 'Clintie'." Following in the footsteps of other Norwegian acts (the highly successful "those Norwegians & Rune Lindbaek) being championed by paper, Kahuun fills these shoes admirably. Kai Mæland, the man behind Kahuun, is living in Bergen. His music is influenced by old black afro-funk to the latest in electronic madness. He released his first record at Manchester-based Paper recordings and thereafter released records on several Norwegian labels such as Tellé and Hifi Terapy. These days he is working on his new release on Hifi Terapy as well as different remix projects. Kahuun is a well respected Dj who has been an important part of the underground scene in his home town since 1992 and has been resident in dozens of different clubs. Having trained as a percussionist, his live stage shows are somewhat of a clubbing legend, beginning with a two-minute bongo workout in ferocity until kicking into a flute rendition of "Paint it black" by the Stones. 13. Moonstarr (Canada) 'Santa Claus and I conferred on the song, "What should we do?". It was an already brilliant arrangement! The decision was to recompose it with highlights of the original and additives of contemporary goodness: Santa's bells with batucada b-boy badness. Hope you enjoy !' Kevin Moon aka Moonstarr first started producing music and djing since the age of 17. Now 26, he strives to push the boundaries of electronic music by defying any categories or genres. Citing influences such as Underground Resistance (Detroit Techno), DJ Premier (Hip Hop) and Sergio Mendes (Brazilian Bossa Nova), Moonstarr's sound keeps evolving and expanding. He decided to found his own record label, Public Transit Recordings (PTR) by the second half of the 90s. Its first release, the compilation "Code:416" created a small buzz on college radio stations througout Canada. After executive producing the LAL album in 2000, Moonstarr finally released his first EP Dupont last year which has received large support from DJs like Rainer Trüby or Gilles Peterson. According to Moonstarr the EP "is a broken-down musical expression about the culture of the city." Kevin´s track "Dust" is available on the "Future Sound Of Jazz Vol. 8" (CPT 102), additionally there exists a 12" with "Dupont Remixes" (CPT 108-1). He also worked with Movement´s John Kong to produce the bossa-fied "Future Visions" on Fluid Ounce Records. Watch out for there is something to be released by Mr. Moon on Compost in the near future ! 14. Yukihiro Fukutomi (Japan) 'Honoured by this opportunity to remix a work by Ennio Morricone, whom I truly respect.' The late 80s, the period at the dawn of the Japanese domestic dance / club music scene, Tokyo native Yukihiro Fukutomi started his career as a DJ at clubs like Gold, Zoo and Cave in Tokyo. At the same time he started working as a composer, arranger, programmer and producer. Fukutomi was also involved with the programming for Pizzacato 5. After presenting his first solo project, he received recognition as a pioneer and creator innovator of house and dance music. As one of only a few artists who is able to handle producing, arranging, composing, programming and remixing in the whole process of music production, he has constantly participated in a number of sessions up until now. He´s released three solo albums and got high acclaim for each one as well as for his mini album "Brasilia 2000" and 12" remix of "PEG" in various music circles. His first album was in Gilles Peterson's charts whereas it was a demo track only ! These facts have led to Fukutomi's widespread recognition and respect throughout the international music circuit. Also during the year he´s released a 12" on JCR by the name of "I Am / Music Is The Healer" (JCR 011-1). Moreover, he was flooded with a wide range of labels from various countries. He continues to dj regularly, he has appeared at clubs such as Vendredi (Mishuku web), and Darling of Discotheque (Aoyama Fai). |

Presumably Deep House and Jazz producers Eddy & Dus, the laptopelektroluzzing Computerjockeys and DJ / producer collective Chicken Lips set it off on this 12" in an 'oh so beautiful' fashion! Eddy & Dus have turned "Dal Mare" into a loungy track which will do well on dancefloors. Starting off with laid-back soft melodies it shortly thereafter gets all breaky deep House. Celestial spheres can be anticipated by the angelic female voice. A cunning combination of divine rhythm and pathos in music. The Computerjockeys have electrified "Un Uomo Nello Spazio" and stirred the whole thing up into a salad of cables, wires and computergame-esque soundscapes. So 'the man from Spazio' is cheeping and peeping his way through the track, leaving a trace of bass as he walks by. Harmonic interaction between nostalgia and electronic passion. Turning up with funk the Chicken Lips head straight, hunting you with energetic bass and pumping drums. Relaxed detroit disco style meets bongos ....Dare you fools are not moving, I shall personally come around and drag you there by the collar of your shirt. The fascination and admiration for the man, who Warren Beatty once called '...the most important composer of today's time' and who can refer to no less than 400 pieces of film-music, various pop-classics, numerous pieces of chamber music, several Oscar-, Academy Awards-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominations and an endless list of various different prizes and awards won and received over the last 40 years, is not only reflected in these three producers remakes, but also in their following comments on Ennio Morricone: 1. Eddy & Dus (Croatia) quote /comment & short biography "The greatness of Ennio Morricone, for us, is in his ability to express deep and complex emotions in a simple and minimalistic way. What we also love in his music is the influence of Mediterannean which can be felt throughout his music. It was a great honour to do a remix of a composition by such a great composer !!!" Eddy Ramich and Zvonimir Dusper from Croatia are remarkable deep house and jazz producers representing the next generation of music producers strongly influenced by the variety of dance genres. During the years of breakdance fever Eddy became interested in hip hop, his affection towards black music developed more and more ever since when during his visit to the UK in 1988 he became familiar with acid jazz and soulful house, after which he started djing quite seriously. 2. Computerjockeys (Germany) quote /comment & short biography "Morricone has doubtlessly a good sense for creating tunes you'll immediately get hooked on. At the same time, the very sound of the melody is so catchy it makes up a part as vital to the track as the tune itself. To me, "A Man in Space" is a nice example for this. My remix of the track is mainly based on a variation of the original tune." The two Cologne-based Computerjockeys 'Digital Jockey' and Wolfgang Hagedorn were amongst the first musicians who replaced two turntables with two laptop-computers. 3. Chicken Lips (UK) quote /comment & short biography "Ennio Morricone ....sparse arrangements, unorthodox instrumentation (bells, electric guitars, harmonicas, the distinctive twang of the jew's harp) the guy is crazy, that's why we like him !" Existent since 1999 Chicken Lips are DJ/producers Andy Meecham (Athletico and solo work as Sir Dew) & Dean Meredith (Psychedelia Smith) along with co-hort/DJ Steve 'Fella' Kotey. The pair were once Bizarre Inc. who recorded for Vinyl Solution having 3 UK top 10 hits in the early nineties with 'Playing with Knives', 'Such a Feeling' & 'I'm Gonna Get Ya' remixing the likes of Madonna. With a major change in sound they now keep themselves busy with their work for Kingsize as well as their recordings for Session as ZeeFunkg and for DC recordings as Big200. The boys hold a very busy Dj schedule playing the length and breath of the UK and guesting in various European countries and the States. Chicken Lips have to date had 8 singles with the label and 2 full length albums, with a new artist album, remix album and further singles in the pipeline. Their releases have included remixes by/of Silicone Soul, Justin Robertson, Maurice Fulton & Bentley Rhythm Ace. They have had top 10 chart placements in the DMC Buzz chart, the Music Week CoolCuts and the DJ Beats chart along with radio play by important hosts. On the remix front the guys have completed, or are working on, remixes for Underworld, FC Kahuna, Justin Robertson, Mo'Wax, Playgroup or the Stereo MC's just to mention a few. |

F1. Domu "Alla Serenità" Lazer Sight Mix Original tracks composed and arranged by Ennio Morricone Ennio Morricone turns 75 - Happy Birthday
Who, back in 1934, could have suspected that little 6-year-old Ennio, who had just finished off his first piece of music for his parents, would once become ''...the most important composer of today's time'', according to Warren Beatty (and in all probability many others)? The fact that a jealous Madonna probably told off her boyfriend Warren back then for entitling someone else than herself with such a statement, should hardly have impressed former trumpet player Ennio in any way. Namely Ennio Morricone, who will turn 75 on the 10th of November this year, can refer to far more than 400 pieces of film-music, various pop-classics, numerous pieces of chamber music, several Oscar-, Academy Awards-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominations and an endless list of various prizes and awards won over the last 40 years! Two Contrasts In The Mix
Approximately one and a half years ago, soundtrack producer and music supervisor Stefan Rambow from Cinesoundz approached us with the prophecy that a mixture between Ennio Morricone's epical compositions and his mondo-style pop gems and the electrifying, fresh ideas developed by producers of Compost Records' circle of friends, would become a sweet little something! We shared this vision and thus decided to combine Ennio's legendary melodies with almost every possible style of dance-music, ranging from Downbeat, Drum&Bass, Jazzed-Up-Broken-Beats, House, Tech-House, Electropop to Easy Listening, Ambient and Hip Hop.
With the help of Ennio Morricone's melodies actors no other than Clint Eastwood, Robert de Niro, Terence Hill, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Charles Bronsen, Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Michael Douglas and Jack Nicholson turned into men. This must have been one of the reasons why so many (mostly male) artists approached us on whether they could join the project, and thus acquiring the top dogs of international producers for this project was quite easy-going. They show their respect for the maestro by interpreting their favourite pieces of his work on 'Ennio Morricone Remixes Vol. 1 & 2' with much love and admiration. A formerly smaller project now ended up to be a huge compilation, consisting of two volumes with 41 beautiful tracks in total! 1. International Pony (Germany) 'What we love about music, especially about Morricone, is the combination of playfulness & deepness, melancholy paired with easiness. As we could not have beautified our Morricone favourites in doing the classic remix thing (original samples plus beats, etc...) we rather re-arranged the original instrumental "La Moda", so that all results in a fine little pop song - a sort of "Thank You": We Love Ennio' International Pony are comprised of three equal parts: DJ KOZE, Cosmic DJ and EROBIQUE. Each one of the three has had an amazing musical past! DJ KOZE, former band member of the highly celebrated hip hop band Fischmob, was not only voted DJ of the year by the readers of SPEX four times and by Intro's readers twice in a row, and released an album of his most beautiful remixes, but he has also worked together with legends such as Hildegard Knef and Pierre Henry. Cosmic DJ, also a former band member of Fischmob, has rocked several stages and releases during the last couple of years and EROBIQUE, the classically trained musician aka the fusion between chaos and disco, has spent time playing in several jazz, ska and soul bands and has also released his highly appreciated album 'Erosounds'. Like his partner Koze, EROBIQUE is no slouch in the remix department either having reworked tracks from the likes of Hans Nieswandt (Whirlpool Prod.), Mina and Commercial Breakup, just to name a few. Once upon a time, DJ Koze and Cosmic DJ set sail for the 1998 tour of Fischmob, accompanied by the one-man supporting band EROBIQUE. The three of them locked themselves, their instruments, equipment, and a DAT recording machine into a Berlin hotel room --- and went bonkers. Three days later they left town happily with three vinyl dub plates recorded at the hotel sessions: INTERNATIONAL PONY was born! Although every one involved started to work on solo projects directly thereafter, their future was already pretty evident: The band started to dive deep into the newly discovered Pony cosmos and its related magic. They created their first remixes for Germany´s highly acclaimed Tocotronic, French House legend Bob Sinclair and New York´s Deejay Punkrock. The three add equal parts of R&B, house, funk and bent pop, sprinkle it with a touch of madness and sex, let the pot slowly simmer and then serve it to their massive crowd of fans. 2. Alex Attias (Great Britain) 'Remixing Ennio Morricone's music is a real honour for me, his ability to create moods, atmospheres and unique melodies is timeless. Since getting in to his music, my ultimate ambition is to produce soundtracks. I hope my reinterpretation of 'Le Foto Proibite di una Signora Per Bene' shows my immense respect for the Maestro!' Alex Attias started his DJing career in 1988, in Lausanne Switzerland and throughout the late 80's and early 90's, he established himself as one of Switzerland's top DJ's. By 1995, he was ready to break into the electronic music production, often championed by the likes of 4 Hero, Gilles Peterson & Stacey Pullen. Alex also set up his own label Corn - Flex and was busy collaborating under different guises, with Paul Martin as Beatless and with his Bel-Air colleague as Funkanova. 1997 saw the demise of the Bel-Air Project and Alex moved to England to pursue new musical projects. Mustang, Beatless and Catalyst are currently the main sources of his creative output. In 2000, he set up his new label, Visions Inc., for which he's been busy recording with super keyboard whizzkid Jessica Lauren, and producing tracks for soul singer Vanessa Freeman. His first Beatless album 'Life Mirrors' is out in october 2001 on the American label Ubiquity, featuring tracks recorded in San Francisco with the Daughters from the 70's band 'The Sons And Daughters of Lite', with Stones Throw rapper Quasimoto and the multitalented Colonel Red. In the same year, Irma Records from Italy released his 'Quiet Moments' album, an assortment of chilled and spacy jazz tracks from the past. Released in summer 2002, the first album on his Visions Inc label _THE CHROMATIC UNIVERSE_ has a selection of previous Visions releases and also some exclusives from Dego, IG culture, Plutonia, Vanessa Freeman, Mustang and Domu. In March 2003, Alex made his first film score for the French TV channel Arte. He's currently in the making of his solo project Mustang. 3. Swell Session (Sweden) 'My fascination of Mr Morricone's music is that he always knows how to create a mood, right from the first note, often adding his trademark sense of humour like in "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly". Yet he knows when to just keep it beautiful like in "A Lidia". I feel this is exactly what I try to do as Swell Session and I tried to maintain the humour in "The good, The Bad...'' while remixing.' Growing up on Hönö, a small island outside Gothenburg, Andreas started playing the piano at the age of six and discovered techno and other experimental music at the age of 14. Swell Session is Andreas Saag with invited guest musicians and producers like Jonatan Bäckelie, Yukimi Nagano, Elsa Hedberg, Paul Lachenardiere and Christoffer Berg. 4. Hakan Lidbo (Sweden) 'Morricone can, like no other, make sweet and romantic melodies with an underlying feeling of a forthcoming disaster, you can almost see the film just by closing our eyes. his arrangements are totally unique, not bound by any given rules or standards, very much like today's electronic experimentalists.' Hakan Lidbo is frequently referred to as "the busiest man in the business" and his discography holds more than 140 records and stretches from avantgarde electronica to well produced pop. Hakan has made music for commercials, film, TV series, computer games and even a ballet. He has produced artists like Yello and remixed artists like Ashley Beedle, Si Begg, Sophie Ellis Bextor, John Selway, Fatboy Slim and now... Ennio Morricone. 5. Leroy Hanghofer (Germany) 'Every remix attempt of a ''pop'' producer on Morricone's music is in fact an outrage. Morricone is one of the most important composers of the 20th century and therefore every attempt of an electronic ''home constructor'' to interpret one of his works, has to end inevitably in a ragged disaster. That's why I see my new version (and all others) as some sort of kid's fun and defeats any serious evaluation from the very beginning. U can't mix Beethoven with Stock Aitken & Waterman!!! Musical superknowledge (Morricone) vs. musical ignorance (most of electronic producers incl. myself) doesn't fit. Would u let a matchbox-car-specialist repair your Ferrari?' Leroy Hanghofer's first record 'Pin' was released on Munich's Gomma label in 1998 and soon became peoples favorite piece of vinyl, such as Gilles Peterson, many Mowax DJ's and particularly the English press. His 'White Trash' album was released on Gomma 3 years later, with which he proved that swing can be spontaneous, innovative and humourous. Leroy set out to mix the 50's and 70's with irony and his soul, in order to make them club-adequate. People like Trevor Jackson, Black Strobe and New York City's DFA call it their favourite album of 2002 and rumours as well as 'Radio Nova/Paris' claim that Leroy's 'Bathroomboogie' sets the French fashion & club scenes' feet on fire! 6. Raw Deal (Great Britain) 'Like many people my first experience of Mr Morricone's music was the theme from 'The good, the bad the ugly', and from that moment I was hooked, but after further investigation into his career, what really got me was the versatility and range of his music, and this is something that I always try to strive for too!' Jim Robins (aka Raw Deal) from North London is a most talented and motivated producer. His work spans a number of genres and although his influences are diverse his music is always intense. In the past he has worked for and together with acts such as The Pharcyde, Afrika Bambaataa, Roots Manuva, DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, Snowboy, Courtney Pine, Shy Fx and Roy Hargrove! As an artist Raw Deal is known for having a sound that is completely his own and Jim has proved his skills both as a beat-builder and an arranger, with his combinations of contemporary sounds and programming alongside full horn, string and rythm sections. Someone to watch out for! 7. Needs (Germany) 'Some of Morricone's works belong to the most inspiring pieces of music around. As for 'Amore Come Dolore' we felt a strong musical and especially emotional connection to our vibe. To remix this tune was a labour of great respect and admiration, and definitely a great challenge.' Frankfurt based production team and label NEEDS comprise the brothers Lars and Marek Bartkuhn alongside Yannick Elverfeld. Being formed in 1999 the trio has already carved a solid reputation amongst music lovers worldwide as one of the most promising production outfits from Germany. The distinctive trademark sound on which this highly praised collective has been working since the late 90s, is one that subtly displays their widely spread musical influences, which include jazz and funk as well as classic house grooves and soulful techno. NEEDS has rapidly become a synonym for soulful high quality music. 8. Hird (Sweden) 'I enjoyed remixing Morricone so much, there is so much to use and be influenced by in the original piece - the theme, bi-theme, the harmonies and that cowboyridesoffintothesunset-vibe. I wanted this remix to ride off into the sunset and have the horse to stall and go EEEEEHH in the middle of the scene.' Hird is 21 year old Christoffer Berg from Gothenburg in Sweden. Christoffer started making electronic music in his early teens, inspired by the experimental and jazzy Drum&Bass happening at the time. His band ''Octagon Session'' reached some underground recognition and won the cross-over award in the finals of swedens biggest music competition 98 and won the whole thing the year after. Under the Hird pseudonym he mixes modern electronic rhythms and minimalistic downtempo with the retro sounds of jazz and soul-filtered, looped and cut up grooves, recorded and played by himself, sometimes with guest musicians and sometimes with rare samples. The first release from Hird was ''Keep you Hird'', a slow house/jazz groove that was picked up by DJs like Michael Reinboth, Alan Brown, Matthew K., Gilles Peterson, Patric Forge, Coldcut, Wai Wan, Quantic and Nicola Conte. As a remixer, Hird is well sought for, and during this spring, remixes have been done for artists like Plej, Patricia Kaas, Koop and Quant. Chris has shared decks with DJs like Alex Barck from Jazzanova, Pete Herbert, Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area, Alex from Tokyo, DJ Deep and many more. Christoffer is not only a resident DJ at a jazz club, he's also the arranger and conductor of the 10 piece resident live band ''Inhouse Digits''. Christoffer has also done two DJ tours in Japan, playing venues like the Orbient, Ageha, la Fabrique to name but a few, with people such as Yukihiro Fukutomi and Derek May. Christoffer also works on other projects, releasing experimental electronic music as Christoffer Brus on ''Hobby Industries'' in Copenhagen owned by electronic artist and Björk-producer Thomas Knak aka Opiate. Furthermore he plays percussion in the Swell Session live band, mixes tracks for Swedish independent pop success band ''the Knife'', plays with some of Gothenburgs finest jazz musicians in the electronic band ''Priming Orchestra'', does original movie music for a film that will hit the screen this fall, plays records and has coffee at his favourite café ''Café Publik'' in Gothenburg. 9. Kabuki (Germany) 'Morricone is a pioneer in the field of instrumental music and has been an influence in many ways. His sense for space and time is what really make him stand out from the rest.' Kabuki started out as a classical-trained guitarist and caught the Drum&Bass-virus via imported whitelabels in early ´95. He´s been hooked on this music ever since and produced a considerable amount of original tracks and remixes wich appeared on prestigious labels such as Reinforced, No U-Turn and of course his own imprint Precision Breakbeat Research. Kabuki also made a name for himself as a cutting-edge DJ and proved his skills in almost every Drum&Bass-club on the continent as well as on tours through faraway places like Japan. 10. Butti 49 (Norway) 'Morricone has some impressive arrangements, that's also our experience when doing the mix. Taking the different themes apart to reshape them was quite a learning lesson for us!' Butti 49 is producer duo Snorre Seim and Øyvind Jakobsen from Stavanger on the south west Norwegian coast. Together with a circle of musicians they're known for their blend of jazz, brazilian, latin, soul and modern club music. They have released records on Guidance Records, Tokijo, Hi Fi Terapi and done several remixes for artists like: Nuspirit Helsinki, Grupo Arambere, Emo, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Dusko Goykovich and Sandboy. A long awaited album is in the pipeline, and still being processed. 11. Kid Sundance (Netherlands) 'To be honest: I started working on this track when I sampled Morricone two years ago. Originally it was meant as a backing track for a rapper... But as soon as I heard about this project (thanx Thijs!), I listened to the old track again and decided I wanted to finish it as an instrumental. I think the original contains three different vibes. I messed around with them and made one vibe with three parts.' Kid Sundance started as a hip hop DJ in times when loops where made using taperecorders and 'Western von Gestern' was a popular TV series. Through hip hop he got interested in the backbone of the music and started digging for any style that contains dope sounds. He's still performing as a DJ in the tradition of old school block parties, spinning lots of different styles, old to new, to move the crowd. He also likes to improvise with his turntables in jazz settings. Nowadays he works with a sampler, producing hip hop tunes with different rappers, some of which are released on his own label FairDeal Records. 'Fault', his collaboration with Dudley Perkins (Declaime) made it to the 'All Winners 2002' chart of BBC's Worldwide (Gilles Peterson) and was a favorite with many DJs around the world. The follow-up will be released under the title 'Kid Sundance meets Knuckle Draggin Johnson' (FDR004). An upcoming release in 2003 is his EP with MC Rescue with whom he worked before as the Boomoperators. He recorded and performed with X Plastaz, six emcees from Tanzania (East Africa) whose mix of rap and traditional chanting makes a unique blend with Kid Sundance's rugged tracks. Together with E. Capel he formed Daily Soda, an outfit that goes beyond the tempos of hiphop. They do live shows with 1200's, samplers and 'real' instruments. Daily Soda composed the original score for the film Mixed Frequencies ('03). 12. Majbour (Germany) 'Ennio Morricone created heroes by writing awesome soundtracks to the life of the protagonists on screen. Combined with the powerful pictures of Sergio Leone the music had a strong impact on us. When we were kids Morricone's music made us feel like all these western outlaws and we enjoyed ourselves playing dead while listening to it. Being part of a remix project of Morricone's songs was undoubtedly a great honour and let us once again enjoy ourselves by remixing this musical masterpiece.' Majbour consists of Sammy Majbour and his colleague Martin Scherl from Nuremberg. Together with the late Oli Rösch Sammy formed the Stereo-Deluxe-DJ-team Majbour & Deluca. As ambassadors for Break- and Downbeat, Deep House, Lounge, NuJazz, and Brasil, they travelled the length and breadth of the country to spread the name of the Stereo Deluxe label. Martin brings in his experience as a drummer and acts as the studio wizard (some people claim he lives there permanently). Martin's world music project 'Tya' is also very important to him. Sammy provides the creative impetus and the basic ideas for the tracks. Thanks to his extensive travelling, he got to know various musical cultures and met the belonging DJs and musicians. Basically the clubs all over the world are his real home! 13. The Amalgamation Of Soundz (Great Britain) 'To be able to remix one of cinemas greatest masters is a huge honour for both of us.' The Amalgamation Of Soundz are Mark and Jean-Claude. In Mark's case, this is a secondary career, the yin to his yang as he is a practicing dentist where his manual dexterity and discipline translate strongly to modern music making. In Jean-Claude's case, music has never been a hobby. It's something he doesn't have a sense of humour about. Their first production was as TAOS in 1994 and they signed their first contract with Filter in 1995. Ubiquity, Airtight, Compost, Good Looking and Blue Note are just a small selection of the labels they also have had the pleasure of working with. Between remixes and original productions they've released about 70 tracks in total since '95. For the first quarter of 2003 they've signed two 3 track EPs on Moving Shadow's new label Cryptic Shadow plus a tech-house remix of EZ Rollers' ''Back To Love''. They've also signed a three tracker to Brighton label Tru Thoughts and an EP to French label Atcha. But not enough, main activity is without doubt their DJ-residency at London's Fabric! In the future they will be continuing at Fabric including a Fabric CD for Saturdays and of course continue to spread the word '' 14. Kalle Laar aka Temporary Soundmuseum (Latvia) 'Want a crash course about how to combine sounds, invent melodies, arrange instruments, unite the disparate and be elegantly innovative at the same time? Forget music-school, dump your records, just go and watch 'Duck you Sucker'! The tkm hommage/interpretation of the film´s main title is dedicated to its fantastic leading actor James Coburn, who left us while I was working on the track..' The Temporary Soundmuseum, dedicated to the lost (vinyl) music of our digital age, was founded by Kalle Laar. Of Latvian origin, the "Klangmuseum" mastermind established himself in Munich as composer for radio plays (like the multi-awarded Fritz Lang's ,Metropolis'), audio books and theatre, as soundinstallation artist, DJ and musician. He is also editor for music compilations (amongst others the famous ,La Paloma' Trikont series) and author, award winner of the city of Munich, guest lecturer for architecture and sound (Munich College). |

Presumably 'the busiest man in the business' Hakan Lidbo, DJ and producer Alex Attias (Mustang, Bel Air, Beatless) and Dn'B DJ Kabuki set it off on this 12" in an 'oh so beautiful' fashion! Hakan Lidbo's interpretation of "Alla Serenità" is surely not only a delight for solid bassdrum lovers. Its combination of bass and beat award the track with a magnificent shuffle, which is slowly given a colourful nuance by Ennio's mondo sounds. A warm vocal sample perceptively beds itself onto the instrumental and gives the listener the impression of absolute contentedness. These are wonderful 253 seconds of harmonic interaction between nostalgia and electronic passion. Alex Attias uses a similar recipe. Like Hakan Lidbo he supports Ennio Morricone's original track in this case 'Le Foto Proibite Di Una Signora Per Bene' - with a steady, straight bassdrum, but immediately indicates a striking groove by adding those vivid offbeat-snarebrushes, -hihats and basslicks. And what is there more to say, but that Alex did it once again!? This deep-detroit-spacey track with its candlelight-illuminated mmmmh-vocals moves us and our feet. Meanwhile Ennio's distinctive sinking harmonic pitches round off the track beautifully! Kabuki, of course, hit the original 'Dal Mare' with his special Broken Beat-formula. A simple picked melody fights for its place in a doubletime beat, but is shortly after supported by additional, accentuated melody pickings. We don't need no water, let the muthaphunka burn! 1. Hakan Lidbo (Sweden) quote /comment & short biography "Morricone can, like no other, make sweet and romantic melodies with an underlying feeling of a forthcoming disaster, you can almost see the film just by closing our eyes. his arrangements are totally unique, not bound by any given rules or standards, very much like today's electronic experimentalists." Hakan Lidbo is frequently referred to as "the busiest man in the business" and his discography holds more than 140 records and stretches from avantgarde electronica to well produced pop. Hakan has made music for commercials, film, TV series, computer games and even a ballet. He has produced artists like Yello and remixed artists like Ashley Beedle, Si Begg, Sophie Ellis Bexter, John Selway, Fatboy Slim and now... Ennio Morricone. 2. Alex Attias (United Kingdom) quote /comment & short biography "Remixing Ennio Morricone's music is a real honour for me, his ability to create moods, atmospheres and unique melodies is timeless. Since getting in to his music, my ultimate ambition is to produce soundtracks. I hope my reinterpretation of 'Le Foto Proibite di una Signora Per Bene' shows my immense respect for the Maestro!" Alex Attias started his DJing career in 1988, in Lausanne Switzerland and throughout the late 80's and early 90's, he established himself as one of Switzerland's top DJ's. By 1995, he was ready to break into the electronic music production, often championed by the likes of 4 Hero, Gilles Peterson & Stacey Pullen. Alex also set up his own label Corn - Flex and was busy collaborating under different guises, with Paul Martin as Beatless and with his Bel- Air colleague as Funkanova. 1997 saw the demise of the Bel - Air Project and Alex moved to England to pursue new musical projects. 3. Kabuki (Germany) quote /comment & short biography "Morricone is a pioneer in the field of instrumental music and has been an influence in many ways. His sense for space and time is what really make him stand out from the rest." Kabuki started out as a classical-trained guitarist and caught the Drum&Bass-virus via imported whitelabels in early ´95. On this year's 10th of November, Ennio Morricone will turn 75, and we can finally sing out our 'German-accent-flavoured-birthday-tune', whilst handing the maestro our neatly wrapped present: 'Ennio Morricone Remixes Vol. 1 & 2' But in case that some of you just can't wait for the day to arrive, we came up with a small, neat, little something that will definitely cure your curiosity! This 12" release contains three of the overall 40 interpretations, that were produced by topnotch Dance- and Electro-Producers from all over the world. They show their respect towards the maestro and call out a loud 'big-up' by interpreting their favourite pieces of Ennio's work with much love and admiration. This must have been one of the reasons why so many (mostly male) artists came up to us, in order to ask whether they could join the project. On this 7" Germany's 2 hilarious 3 people International Pony and Australian Crazy Baldheads give you a small taste of how different remixes of Ennio Morricone can sound. The International Pony We Love Ennio Mix is basically exactly how they describe it in their comment on Ennio Morricone further down, namely a rearrangement of the original with additional vocals. No chance to get away with not singing along! Here we go: "Mr. Morricone..." ba bap bap ba baaah bap, "we love Ennio" yeah, yeah. Crazy Baldheads keep it all layed back with a grave, but sentimental sound, that guides us from trip hops spheric faces, through long winded choires to up-beat movements and drops off our minds miles away from home. Lost in thought. The fascination and admiration for the man, who Warren Beatty once called '...the most important composer of today's time' and who can refer to no less than 400 pieces of film-music, various pop-classics, numerous pieces of chamber music, several Oscar-, Academy Awards-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominations and an endless list of various different prizes and awards won and received over the last 40 years, is not only reflected in these two producers remakes, but also in their following comments on Ennio Morricone: 1. International Pony (Germany) quote /comment & short biography "What we love about music, especially about Morricone, is the combination of playfulness & deepness, melancholy paired with easiness. As we could not have beautified our Morricone favourites in doing the classic remix thing (original samples plus beats, etc...) we rather re-arranged the original instrumental "La Moda", so that all results in a fine little pop song - a sort of "Thank You": We Love Ennio." International Pony are comprised of three equal parts: DJ KOZE, Cosmic DJ and EROBIQUE. Each one of the three have had an amazing musical past! DJ KOZE, former bandmember of the highly celebrated hip hop band Fischmob, was not only voted DJ of the year by the readers of SPEX four times and by Intro's readers twice in a row, and released an album of his most beautiful remixes, but he also worked together with legends such as Hildegard Knef and Pierre Henry. Cosmic DJ, also former bandmenber of Fishmob, has rocked several stages and releases during the last couple of years and EROBIQUE, the classically trained musician aka the fusion between chaos and disco, has spent time playing in several jazz-, ska- and soulbands and also released his highly appreciated album 'Erosounds'. Although every one involved started to work on solo projects directly thereafter, their future was already pretty evident: The band started to dive deep into the newly discovered Pony cosmos and it's related magic. They created their first remixes for Germany´s highly acclaimed Tocotronic, French House legend Bob Sinclar and New York´s Deejay Punkrock. The three add equal parts of R&B, house, funk and bent pop, sprinkle it with a touch of madness and sex, let the pot slowly simmer and then serve it to their massiv crowd of fans 2. Crazy Baldheads (Australia) quote / comment & short biography "We chose this obscure Ennio sample for its beautiful vocal quality. Mr Morricone has shown us how to suggest a mood with unique combinations and sonic manipulation of undervalued instruments." Crazy Baldheads started as a partnership between Tim Prince and Pete Lawler in 1997 through their mutual love for reggae, especially Lee Perry style dub, and also a love for powerful hip hop music and lyrics. The 4 heads are: Professor Loom(Tim Prince) is the engineer, programmer and various instrument player while also adding vocals and lyrics. Miselenious (Eleni Meros) is our vocalist, sampling provider and parttime lyricist...= CRAZY BALDHEADS |

This one sided 12" will give you a small taste of what the Ennio Morricone remix project will sound like! German producer couple 2Raumwohnung definitely get it on, and aim for our stomach with a phazed-up bassloop that viciously runs around in circles. The mixture of this basslick, a soaking wet snare with a hard kicking bassdrum, a steelguitar-loop and a bad-breath-whistle fully results in monotonous beauty! 2Raumwohnung (Germany) quote / comment & short biography "Morricone builds a bridge between classic and pop music. He pays a lot of attention to tones and sounds, that makes him all time modern." 2Raumwohnung are Inga Humpe and Tommi Eckart, and they are with no doubt one of the most hyped producers, artists, singers, songwriters etc. momentarily. Their discography seems endless. They have worked for artists such as The Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, Marc Almond, Trevor Horn, Sin with Sebastian, Howard Jones, Trio, Hubert Kah and many, many others! These two Berlinresidents are in the process of spreading their Euroexperimental sound over the world! |

| "I recall someone else tried this before, that is remixing Morricone's music - God, it was shocking, I can't recall the artists involved but they murdered his music. This time though the Compost extended family have come thru with the goods. The right people, the right sounds & the right collection. I love Butti 49's version of "Revolution" - gotta be a club classic. All the artists involved have obviously poured their heart and soul into the re-interpretations and it shows. This is one helluva tight album. Refreshing. 5/5" (Paul Gamblin / Black & Blue Radio Show)
"Allein bei Swell Sessions Version von The Good, The Bad & The Ugly kriecht einem eine Gänsehaut über den Rücken." "Hakan Lidbo mix rocked the floor on Saturday ... superb symphonic deep techno! The whole album on CD is very nice as a whole." (Nathan McLay / TownB Radioshow, Australia) |
